Anyone choosing a CRM compares interfaces, prices and modules. The question that decides whether caller ID will work appears in none of those comparisons – and it is this:
Can this system be asked about a phone number?
The distinction sounds pedantic and is not. Almost every CRM can search for a name. When the phone rings, the name is precisely what is missing. What is needed is the reverse: from the number to the record, in the one moment the call allows.
The number that describes the industry
This is not a verdict on the quality of those systems. An ERP that has no reverse lookup is not a bad ERP – it is simply unusable for this one purpose. Knowing that in advance changes the plan.
What a CRM must be able to do – and what Odoo does
| What is needed | Why | Odoo |
|---|---|---|
| Answer a query by phone number | Without it there is no caller ID, only a nightly copy | yes |
| Return company and contact person | The caller is rarely the company itself | yes |
| Include a customer number and a link | One click into the record saves the search | yes |
| Accept a note | The conversation should not stay in someone's head | yes |
| Create a contact | Today's unknown caller is tomorrow's customer | yes |
| Attach a person to an existing company | Otherwise a second company of the same name appears | yes |
| Report open items and orders | Whoever is on the phone often needs more than a name | yes |
The right-hand column is the reason for the recommendation. Many systems can read. Few can write back, and fewer still can attach a person to an existing company – yet that is what decides whether a set of records is still usable a year later or consists of duplicates.
Measured, not claimed
The 63 per cent are not Odoo's achievement alone. They say more about the records: a CRM knows customers. Suppliers, public authorities and tradespeople are not in there, and they call all the same.
The way back – the half nobody talks about
For most providers, caller ID ends with the name. The second half only begins there: whatever follows from the conversation has to go back into the system, or it is recorded nowhere.
- After hanging up, a field appears for the note. What is written there lands on the contact – with the direction and duration of the call.
- If the caller was unknown, they can be created from the tile. The first question is whether the number belongs to a company or a person – a difference that is hard to correct afterwards.
- For a person, the company can be searched in your own records and selected. The new contact is then attached to the existing company instead of creating a second one with the same name.
- Nothing is written unless your company has enabled it individually, and only with credentials you provide for that purpose. None of it is a default.
What Odoo has to provide
- An account with read access to the contacts. For the way back, write access as well – ideally a separate service account, so the Odoo log shows where a change came from.
- Phone numbers in the contacts. Odoo keeps several number fields; all of them are queried.
- Reachability from outside – the query goes to your Odoo address at the moment of the call. Whether you run Odoo yourself or use it as a service makes no difference.
When we do not recommend Odoo
A recommendation that knows only reasons in favour is an advertisement. Three cases where the answer is different:
- The records are elsewhereReplacing a well-kept CRM so the phone shows a name is the most expensive solution to the smallest problem.
- The trade decidesLaw firm, medical practice, care service, haulier: there the specialist software holds the records, and it is not replaced by a general CRM.
- The numbers are missingA CRM without maintained phone numbers recognises nobody – Odoo included. That is a question of data, not of the system.
And when nobody is in the CRM
Some callers are in no CRM at all. For them there is the built-in number book: names you assign yourself, visible to everyone in your company. In one measurement, twenty entries raised the recognition rate by 28.6 percentage points. Twenty lines, once.
Frequently asked questions
Which CRM is suitable for caller ID?
One that can be queried by phone number and answers while the phone is still ringing. That sounds obvious and is not: of fourteen systems we checked on 5 and 6 September 2026 against their own interface documentation, two could. Odoo is one of them.
Why do you recommend Odoo?
Because it covers the whole round trip: it can be asked by phone number, returns company and contact person, takes a note, creates a new contact and links it to an existing company. Many systems can read. Few can write back.
Do I have to use Odoo for Haus iT Caller ID to work?
No. The portal knows many systems, and the built-in number book needs none at all. The recommendation applies when the choice is still open.
When would you not recommend Odoo?
When another system is already in use and its records are maintained. Changing a CRM so that the phone shows a name is the most expensive of all solutions – and usually the wrong one.
What does the integration cost?
The portal with its Webex connection and the number book is free, with no limit on workplaces. The Webex tile is billed per user and month, the reports per company. You pay your Odoo licence to Odoo, not to us.
